Is suicide preventable? Experts say yes. Like all subjects, many disagree, however, the more aware we are, the more preventable it can become. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Like anything else, making ourselves aware of the warning signs, can prevent suicide and save lives.
Suicide is a tragedy that touches the lives of many Americans. Many of us may know someone, such as a friend, family member, or coworker who has attempted or died by suicide. Over the past two decades, suicide rates have steadily risen in the United States. Suicide is currently ranked 10th for cause of death among all ages. With our commitment and community engagement, home and workplace reinforcements together we can help reduce and prevent the number of suicides.
What are the warning signs
- Feeling extreme depression, guilt, or shame.
- Feeling hopeless.
- Talking about, or preoccupation with, death or suicide.
- Preparing for death, such as updating/preparing a will, giving away possessions, or taking steps to access lethal means (buying a firearm, acquiring quantities of pills/medication, researching ways to die).
- Exhibiting a dramatic change in behavior, including withdrawal from friends or usual activities, increased alcohol/drug use, difficulties in sleeping or eating, decreased self-care.
With 703,000 or more people dying by suicide daily according to World Health Organization, suicide is the leading cause of death in the United States. When we tell personal stories, and raise awareness, we can then prevent suicide. We cannot, however, prevent anything without putting in work. Like anything, we must be supportive, listen, give of our time and actually care. Let’s get ready to roll up our sleeves and start making a difference in order to save a life. We have seven days until National Suicide Awareness Month Begins on September 1st. Let’s save lives!
