It’s another day of doctors visits. It seems like that’s all I’ve been doing lately, is going from one appointment to another, but…I’m thankful. What many don’t know, is that for a very long time, I couldn’t afford to go to the doctor due to my lack of insurance coverage. That is currently still the case, however, a few factors have changed.
I must say…I have had the greatest experience with my Healthcare team over this past year. Being without insurance has been a very difficult, yet humbling experience. In the past, I have worked, at times, for days and weeks at a time, in pain and feeling unwell, but unable to seek medical attention, and unable to afford prescriptions. Hospitals have literally, left me sitting in hallways and in triage and waiting rooms for hours, in pain, because of having no insurance.
Thankfully, my transparency, my continued praying, and others advocating for me, has allowed me to NOW have some amazing people on my care team, although I STILL AM WITHOUT INSURANCE. When I had top tier insurance, I expected top tier medical care, yet, at times, was treated as if I was asking for far too much. Now, still without insurance, I am being cared for by people who are serving out of love and care. These people have a wonderful bedside manner, and they show genuine concern for those whom they serve. Initially, I expected to be treated as a charity case, yet I was treated with love and respect. I have been given resources…hope…a HAND UP, RATHER THAN A HAND OUT.
Places like Sheppards Clinic, and my Care team at Medstar, is why I still have a positive outlook on life. I Know that in spite of everything, there are still amazing people in this world with hearts like mine. Remember that Kindness goes a long way. Whatever you’re going through, remember that this test, although it may be long, it’s temporary. STAY THE COURSE. TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE IT.
