I SURVIVED

Happy May!

Today begins Mental Health Awareness Month. May is one of my favorite months In my opinion, this is the most important awareness month there is. I celebrate this month with excitement, because I SURVIVED. I didn’t always care for my mind, and it nearly cost me my life, but…I SURVIVED. No one could see my suffering…not even me. God saw it, and He saved me. Yes, I SURVIVED.

You see, we can eventually see the affects of physical illnesses, and some of us tend to think that these things are of greater importance. What we must understand, however, is that mental illness is real. Because we can’t see it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Therefore, it matters. It is time that we let go of the Stigma, that discussing mental health is bad.

We need to discuss mental health in church, in our social settings, with friends, our families, our doctors…even with people we don’t know. Most of us are struggling with something. We must discuss it to let others know, IT’S OK TO NOT BE OKAY.

The subject of mental illness is just as important as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and various other illnesses. What many of us tend to forget, or fail to comprehend, is that if we don’t care for our brain, we take the chance of subjecting ourselves to things that will negatively effect our bodies; resulting in the aforementioned physical ailments. People are quick to claim anxiety, and depression, yet these are two major mental illnesses that can worsen if left untreated.

If we don’t minimize the severity of AIDS, Cancer, Diabetes, and Heart Disease, we should not minimize the importance of having a healthy mind. If we can go to the doctor to treat our physical ailments, we should be just as willing to be treated for the issues that negatively effect our minds. Our brain controls all that we do, therefore we must care for it above all else.

From today forward, I urge everyone to take mental health and mental illness seriously. Make it a priority to not only care for your body and spirit, but for your mind as well…they are all dependent upon each other. Our bodies, minds, and spirits make up the totality of who we are, so we must focus on the total package.

Finally, we must be cognizant of our words and actions. How we treat people, and the things we say can negatively effect how they view themselves. Mental illness is real. Because we can’t see it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. It’s time for us to be more kind and gentle to others. We must be a part of their healing, and not add to what’s tearing them down.

On this first day of May, 2025, let’s come together and focus on having a healthy mind, and begin to live healthier, and happier lives. When our minds are healthy, our bodies become healthier. When we are healthy in mind and body, we desire a healthy spirit. Let’s get to a better version of ourselves, as together, in this month of May and beyond, we heal mind, body, and spirit, because MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS! I SURVIVED. YOU CAN TOO.

I am a recently single mother of four wonderful adult children. I love young people and have a passion for developing and motivating people. After spending over thirty years in the customer service industry, and my world was suddenly turned upside down, I found myself having to start my life over. Realizing that I could no longer maintain a healthy mental state while working with the public, I decided to use my passion for helping people and motivating US to turn our PAIN INTO POWER.
