Happy Mental Health Awareness Month
Day 13: Trauma and Mental Illness
Trauma is defined as an extremely stressful, frightening and/or distressing event, or series of events, that are often, difficult to cope with, and usually out of our control. A traumatic experience could be one incident, or an ongoing, series of events, that take place over a long period of time.
Most of us will experience some sort of traumatic event, at least once, in our lifetime. Oftentimes, these events will occur during our youth. Many of our experiences, depending on how traumatic, can determine who we become, and how we navigate life. For this reason, it is important that we heal from our trauma. If possible, seeking therapy is essential.
Trauma can significantly impact mental health. When trauma; especially childhood trauma, is left unhealed, it can potentially lead to mental illnesses, and/or potentially exhacerbate other previouly diagnosed mental health issues. Trauma-related experiences, such as abuse, neglect, or witnessing violence, can trigger conditions like PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
Because of the longterm, and potentially permanent negative side effects of trauma, most mental health professionals, recommend therapy/counseling soon after the traumatic experiences. When pertaining to childhood trauma, it is suggested that children attend therapy in order to prevent their traumas from intruding on their adult life.
From experience, I believe, that in order to responsibly and peacefully overcome trauma, therapy is imperative.
As I continue to heal from all that has threatened to keep me bound, I help to heal other broken souls…one by one…as together, we become stronger.
We can overcome the battle of mental illness, as we fight together to break the stigma.
Together, we can heal.
